PODCAST: We’re Asking for (and Getting) What We Want
What are your work aspirations? A conference or training session? A higher performance rating, salary, or job title? Feedback from a respected colleague? A project you’d like to lead? Clarified communication from your boss? Or perhaps an extension on a deadline?
These are the types of things that Amy Gallo and four listeners sought (and mostly received) during Alison Fragale’s “nos challenge” from the Women at Work episode titled “To Get What You Want, Be Both Assertive and Warm.”
In this video, Brian Chesky, Airbnb CEO, discusses the balance between being involved in details and allowing autonomy within a team, emphasizing the importance of setting high standards while avoiding micromanagement.
He also shares insights on leadership as a continuous journey, navigating crises like COVID-19 with resilience, and fostering a customer-focused, community-driven vision for long-term success.

A.I. Is Changing How Silicon Valley Builds Start-Ups
Almost every day, Grant Lee, who runs a tech company in Silicon Valley, gets calls from investors wanting to give him money. Some have even sent him and his business partners fancy gift baskets!
Normally, Mr. Lee, who is 41, would be thrilled. In the past, a rapidly growing startup like Gamma, the artificial intelligence company he co-founded in 2020, would always be searching for more funding. However, Gamma, like many new Silicon Valley startups these days, is trying a different approach.
OpenAI’s Former Chief Technology Officer Starts Her Own Company
Mira Murati, the former chief technology officer of OpenAI who surprisingly left in September, has started a new artificial intelligence company called Thinking Machines Lab. This adds to the growing number of new companies all trying to be the best in the A.I. field.
Thinking Machines Lab wants to "make A.I. systems easier to understand, more customizable, and more powerful overall," according to a post on their company blog. They also said they plan to freely share their technology with other researchers and companies, which is called "open source."
